THE Y2K STARTER KIT

The Cinderella SLUG2000 Y2k Starter Kit

The Y2k Cinderella Secretariat is pleased to announce the availability of Distribution version 1.5 of the Y2k Starter Kit.

The Y2k Starter Kit diskette is intended for those who do not readily have access to the Internet and consists of selected Free Tools (freely available for download on the Net), Procedures and Documents to enable Home users and Small Businesses to modify their systems for use after 1999-12-31.

This toolkit was built for the Y2kAFRIK project, to allow wide scale distribution by Y2kAFRIK correspondents.

This diskette is intended to support Y2k Awareness Day (1998-08-19), and is intended for use by individuals, PC Dealers, Schools and all interested parties.

The idea is to use it, copy it and give it to your friends.

The disk images and resulting bootable diskettes are intended for free distribution and copying, but are not for resale. Y2k Information must be freely available.

Comments and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Contents of Toolkit

1. DOSCHK is a diagnostic program, written by Bob Stammers that tests any PC hardware for Y2k non-compliance.

2. SLUG2000 is a Y2k "fix" program, written by Chris Anderson, that ensures that invalid dates are detected and corrected when booting a PC, and thus repairing machines with non-compliant BIOS components.

3. Essential program fixes for Windows 3.1, 3.11 and Windows 95

4. Text files (for printing) that describe procedures for testing, notes on making Operating Systems compliant and test reports on commonly used programs.

5. Fixes to convert DOS date to YY-MM-DD form and techniques to convert Windows to utilise the ISO8601 yyyy-MM-dd date standard.

6. VIEWCMOS program, written by Tom Becker, diplays the BIOS, RTC and SYSTEM clocks in real time. Allows you to check whether the value in position x'32 is 19 or 20

B. EXTRACT THE FILES

Manufacturers just hate it if you distribute bootable diskettes. But it is recommended that Y2k testing is done from a bootable diskette.

The "Instal" process will unpack the executable programs and Menu items into the SLUG2000 Directory (with subdirectories TOOLKIT or TOOLW95 depending on OS) on the hard drive, and start MENU.

To return to the test and instal process after installation, cd \slug2000\toolw95 and type MENU.

You type MAKEDISK A: (with a new diskette in drive a:) to create a bootable test diskette.
You never give away or copy the bootable disks.
